The Best Safe Buying Checklist

Start with what you store

List exactly what goes inside: handguns, long guns with optics, documents and passports, cash, jewelry, hard drives or keys.
Decide what you need protection from most: kids and visitors, burglary, fire, water, or all of them. One safe rarely does everything equally well.

Lock and access

Pick a lock type: mechanical dial (no batteries, slower), electronic keypad (fast, needs batteries), biometric (fast when it reads, check owner reports) or key.
Check the backup entry: a key, an override code or external battery terminals, and plan where the backup key lives (never inside the safe).
For quick access, check keypad backlighting, whether the door springs open, and how owners rate the fingerprint reader.

Steel and build

Check the steel gauge or wall thickness: the lower the gauge number, the thicker the steel (12-gauge is thicker than 16-gauge).
Look at the door: number and diameter of locking bolts, hinge design, and whether there are obvious pry points at the edges.
Look for independent burglary ratings or listings (such as UL RSC or the California DOJ firearm safety device roster) rather than marketing words like "heavy-duty". See gun safes

Fire and water protection

Check who rated the fire protection: UL or Intertek (ETL) certification, or only the maker's own claim.
Read the rating fully: the duration (30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours), the temperature, and whether it protects paper or digital media.

Size, placement and anchoring

Measure the spot (closet floor, nightstand, wall cavity, vehicle console) and compare with exterior dimensions and door swing. See wall & floor safes
Compare interior dimensions with your largest item, and leave room for what you add later.
Plan the anchoring: pre-drilled holes, included bolts, and a floor or wall that can take them. A small safe that isn't bolted down can be carried away. See home safes
For a car or truck, check the mounting bracket or security cable and where it fits in your vehicle. See car & vehicle safes

Law and everyday care

Check your state and local firearm storage laws, including rules for storing guns in vehicles. See safe how-tos
Plan for humidity: a dehumidifier or desiccant protects guns and papers inside a sealed safe. See safe accessories
Write down the code, serial number and support contact, and keep them somewhere secure outside the safe.
